Best-selling thriller writer Jo Nesbo’s detective Harry Hole makes it to the big screen after several false starts, it was once going to be directed by Martin Scorsese, and gets a good fit in the form of Michael Fassbender. There have been 11 books in this series so far, so this seems like a blatant franchise starter. The disappearance of a young woman reignites Hole’s theory that an elusive serial killer is at work, taking victims every snowfall in a bitterly cold Norway. Joining him in his investigation is Rebecca Ferguson’s up-and-coming detective who may eventually form the bait for the deranged but fiendishly clever serial killer to strike again. A classy supporting cast including Toby Jones, JK Simmons and Val Kilmer add weight to the formulaic thriller proceedings. Fassbender does maverick, enigmatic copper well under Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy director Alfredson’s cool eye, making this a chilly, solid, if unspectacular, police procedural.
