The Rose & Crown Public House can be found nestling in the charming historic village of Nottage, just minutes from the coast at Porthcawl. Originally one of five public houses, the pub was formed from two old cottages – Rose Cottage and Crown Cottage. Nottage is a quaint little village with little stone cottages and old inns, and has deep historic roots. Local names such as Sker and Tuskar are both of Viking origin.
Set in such an idyllic location, The Rose & Crown is the perfect country pub, with a fine selection of beers and ales and it is also listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide 2012. The menu is traditional fare but with seasonal updates and specials. We had homemade tomato and pepper soup, crab cakes with aioli and lime followed by chicken and ham pie with Maris Piper chips. From the specials board we enjoyed fillet steak with pepper sauce and chips. Unfortunately we were too full to try the desserts, but a good selection of homemade sweets are available.
If you’re in the area on bank holiday weekend, it is well worth popping along to the annual beer, cider and sausage festival from Thurs 3-Mon 7 May for great ales, good food and live music. The Rose & Crown is the perfect spot for a lazy afternoon in the sun; you may have to book though as it gets very busy at the weekends. ANTONIA LEVAY
