Anarchy is set to break out in Cardiff when the Punk Art Forever exhibition arrives this January. Organised and archived by Gerrion Jones, a self proclaimed punk since he was thirteen after watching the Sex Pistols on television, the exhibition displays just 50% of Jones’s personal collection of punk art posters, documentation, graphics, photographs and artwork from the late 1970s.
Punk Art Forever started out as a three-day exhibition at Merthyr Tdyfil College, but after running for six weeks and attracting over 1500 visitors, Jones decided to take Punk on the road across South Wales. The exhibition has been seen at venues such as the Ebbw Vale Miners’ Institute but has now finally made its way to an official space at the Howard Gardens Gallery.
Catch posters of The Clash, the Sex Pistols and the Damned alongside work by a number of important artists in the world of punk culture.’ Jamie Reid, the man responsible for the God Save the Queen logo, Jimmy Cauty and Billy Childish will feature alongside a few of Jones own pieces. Jones wants visitors to view punk from all perspectives; through film and poetry, and not just through band slogans. The exhibition is a chance to re connect with the social context behind the youth sub culture, ‘a time when people felt there was no future – very similar to how it is today.’ Admission: Free.
