PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT | STAGE REVIEW

3 stars

Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay, Wed 8 Jan

The allure of Jason Donovan playing Tick in the lead in the fabulous Priscilla, was overwhelming, since he’s now a stalwart in stage and musical circles since playing Joseph, back in the day.

The film version of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is of course a firm favourite, with Terence Stamp and Guy Pearce displaying a revealing side to their acting repertoire. These are big boots to fill but given the eye popping stage sets and beautiful costumes who could resist the challenge. Jason does the role justice and displays both camp frivolity and a sensitive side and fully embraces I Will Survive and Go West, complete with candy coloured costumes, ankle breaking platforms and an array of wigs and make up that Cher would kill for, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert is all about the big songs and camaraderie on a trip across Australia. It’s an emotional ride but unforgettable, in particular the divas suspended from ropes from the ceiling, with voices that blew the roof off, and of course the three lead roles who are utterly convincing as road trip buddies. The whole show is a blast.
