What does Rugby mean to Wales? Where does the heart of rugby lie? These are just two of the questions Welsh author and poet Owen Sheers dissects in his latest book, Calon: A Journey To The Heart Of Welsh Rugby, set for release on Fri 1 Feb. The innovative author takes the reader on an exclusive journey behind the scenes of his year spent at the heart of Welsh rugby as the WRU’s artist in residence.
Illuminating what it really means to be a rugby player and fan in Wales, the book’s launch comes just in time for the return of the iconic Six Nations championship – which is fitting seeing as Calon recalls the story behind the success of the 2012 Six Nations – a tournament which threw Wales into their third Grand Slam success in the past eight years. Whilst appointed as the WRU’s artist in residence, Sheers draws on his interviews and unprecedented access with Welsh Rugby Union players and coaching staff to create an intimate portrait of the sport that defines our nation.
