INSIDE OUT
Butetown History & Arts Centre, Cardiff Bay
Until Tues 30 Aug
Butetown History & Arts Centre aims to collect, preserve and present the lived history of old Cardiff Bay; drawing upon photographs, documents and memories of local people. Inside Out is an exhibition of black and white photographs of Butetown taken by local brothers Anthony and Simon Campbell. Spanning a period from the 1970s to the 1990s, the focus is on the people who make up the community.
Anthony Campbell (born 1956) played bass guitar in local soul band Messiah during the 1970s. He always had a camera handy to photograph people during breaks in the music, in pubs and clubs such as The Paddle Steamer and The Talk Of The Town. Simon Campbell (born 1957) has a long history of working within the local community; he helped to establish the Butetown Photography Group, a Cultural and Educational Centre and the Black Film And Video Workshop.
The brothers were motivated by the predominance of outsiders’ images of the area formerly known as Tiger Bay. They sought to redress the balance. Most of the people depicted were known to them and are named in the captions. Images from different years are juxtaposed; for example, a photo of the first Bute Carnival in the mid 1970s next to one from the 1990s. The photographs document a period of great change in the physical environment of Cardiff Bay, but they show a great continuity of spirit and community. Admission: free.
