Serving as a prequel to his debut novel This is Memorial Device, David Keenan’s fifth such work is, in all its glory, a complex hippy-trippy journey toward Afghanistan, highlighting the psychedelic experience of the 1960s.
Industry Of Magic & Light primarily focuses on a small group of hippies in the town who run their own light show as well as delving into other bands from the gig scene of that time and into other timelines and places – supported by pictures, posters, maps and more.
The book is split into two parts, ‘Light’ and ‘Magic’. The first features an inventory of items in an abandoned caravan and the latter is – fascinatingly – told through a tarot card reading, all depicting that the hippy dream isn’t what it’s all cracked up to be.
When breaking it down, the author ultimately aims to evoke the psychedelic intricacy of that era. It can be challenging to follow at times, especially if you aren’t familiar with Keenan’s previous works, but it is evident that he is a uniquely intriguing writer. A great exploration if you’re willing to sign up for the whole trip.
