While funk and soul may have taken a back seat in the mainstream over the last few years, Hannah Williams And The Tastemakers have been waging a campaign to rescue them from the musical genre retirement home. By sheer force of numbers (seven in all), the band are certainly capable of dragging both into the 21st century, and along with the likes of Alice Russell, Smoove And Turrell and The New Mastersounds, they’re keeping the UK soul scene in fine fettle. Add in the band’s considerable talent and the recommendation of genre heavyweights like 6 Music DJ Craig Charles (aka Red Dwarf’s Lister and Corrie’s Lloyd the cabbie), and it seems a certainty that Hannah Williams and her Tastemakers are set for bigger things.
After supporting US soul mainstays Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley – as well as hip-hop legends The Sugarhill Gang – Hannah Williams And The Tastemakers are now headlining their own UK tour, and they head to Cardiff just two days before their debut album A Hill Of Feathers is released by Record Kicks on Mon 15 Oct.
A quick look at YouTube will give you a glimpse of their energetic live performance, and along with Hannah Williams’ powerful vocal range, you can expect saxophones, tambourines, bongos and kazoos to be blown and shaken with great gusto in a high energy performances exploding with enthusiasm. A snip at £3.
