EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!!
Dir: Richard Linklater (15, 116 mins)
The director of Boyhood returns with a spiritual sequel to one of his first films Dazed and Confused, and it’s another charming, perceptive and poignant slice of life. Set over the course of one weekend in 1980, the film follows a group of baseball players having a blow out before they return to school, a shaggy dog tale all about characterisation and a moment of captured youth. Blake Jenner plays Jake, a pitcher about to start at a new university in Texas, who moves into his new shared house and meets a variety of different new people, including the arrogant moustachioed Tyler Hoechlin, paisleyed cat nip Finn played by Glen Powell, and niceness personified Dale (J Quinton Johnson) amongst many others. Linklater manages to give the high school ‘types’ hidden depths from the archetypal jock to the dreamer with winning affection.
Often very funny and tremendously evocative both of the 80s and those youthful moments of promise and discovery with added pot smoking and disco dancing, Everybody Wants Some!! is tremendous fun full of characters you’ll enjoy spending time with. A worthy successor to Dazed and Confused, this is another illustration of Linklater’s skills with actors, creating a mood and leaving you a bit fuzzy inside.
