In searching for the less conventional spaces to hold a play, innovative theatre company Dirty Protest have this time opted to showcase a new collection of short, interactive plays amongst beds, baths and beer.
Dirty Protest’s latest theatre night is entitled MayDay and sees a collection of seven writers – a mixture of six professionals and one newcomer – accept the challenge of creating their own short plays on the designated MayDay theme.
With only three rules to abide by: it has to be written in four weeks, it must be between three and 10 minutes long, and a maximum cast of one male and two females, the evening is sure to make for a diverse set of entertaining plays.
Debi Mclean curates, with a Scottish playwright, two actors and a comedian amongst the professional writers. Having never written a play before, reception teacher Lowri Owen is the evening’s solitary “Cherrypopper”. “This is my first piece of writing and I’m feeling really nervous about it – give me a class of screaming four year olds any day,” comments Lowri.
Performed at The Bunk House on St. Mary Street, a characterful hostel-cum-bar (hence the beds and baths) the location perfectly suits Dirty Protest’s quirky style. With a reputation for creating distinctive events that have been staged in anything from a yurt to a kebab house, Dirty Protest guarantees an alternative, fun-filled night.
