BULLY’S RESTAURANT | FOOD REVIEW
5 Romilly Crescent, Pontcanna, Cardiff. 029 2022 1905 / www.bullysrestaurant.co.uk
On the back of their recent acclaimed triumph, being named AA Restaurant Of The Year Wales 2014, Bully’s are celebrating a bit of a purple patch. With the accolades rolling in this independent family business is going from strength to strength.
Having been a big fan of their previous location in Llandaff, the Pontcanna incarnation has lost none of its renowned charm, quirky objet d’art interior or its unique French joie de vivre. Bully’s maintains an innate style, attention to fine dining and customer’s satisfaction. Hosting an enviable wine list and dishes that are created with aplomb, it’s understandable why they have been successful in their award.
We’ve visited Bully’s on several lunchtimes, but for the purposes of this review, one occasion – a menu du dejeuner, keenly priced at £35 for two including half a bottle of wine – was chosen. Soup of the day followed by beef bavette, beans and crushed potato with a peppercorn sauce, topped off by a cherry crème brulee, was the choice for me. Other choices on offer included confit salmon with sunblushed tomatoes, fresh anchovies and a caper dressing to start; for main, fillet of mackerel with courgette ribbons, saute potatoes and a salsa verde, plus the obligatory selection of French cheeses. For an incredible price, you are served the best French food available in the area.
Bully’s also offers a five-course tasting menu for £70 per person with matching wines. If you feel a bit daunted when selecting wines with your dishes, this would be a perfect option for you. Russell and Vicky are the perfect hosts and knowledgeable with it.
