Alice is 16 years old and lives in a small Welsh village where nothing ever seems to happen. Then teenage kicks finally arrive when Alice opens the front door to a Mormon missionary in 1.618’s new production The Utah Bride at Chapter this December.
Defying her Welsh Methodist upbringing, Alice decides to run off in search of the American Dream and marry her Mormon. Four years later, the Utah Bride returns to her hometown to face her past and the family she left behind when she went in search of a new one. The play asks whether home really is where the heart is and the true meaning of family when the worst war is at home.
The Utah Bride is 1.618’s first full-length production in collaboration with Arts Council Wales and Sherman Cymru. The play will be delivered for two nights in a script in hand performance after a one week intensive rehearsal period. The Utah Bride is also a rare opportunity for new writer Carmen Medway Stevens to develop the script under mentorship, before director Wyndham Price and the actors set to work. After the short productions Theatre Stripped and Children of Africa, collaboration between a Welsh and African artist, The Utah Bride marks the beginning of an exciting future for 1.618 in 2012.
