Dir: Fede Alvarez (15, 120 mins)
Lisbeth Salander, the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo returns, having Played With Fire and Kicked A Hornet’s Nest in the novels and original trilogy of films with Noomi Rapace. The unnecessary American remake from David Fincher with Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig didn’t set the world alight and the series seemed moribund. Subsequently, creator Stieg Larsson’s popular heroine’s story has been taken over by novelist David Lagercrantz to new best-selling effect, making more film adaptations unavoidable. This all-new adventure for the vengeful hacker and sees her take the form of The Crown’s Claire Foy, clearly relishing the chance to cast off the Queen and get her hands dirty. Enlisted by Stephen Merchant on a hacking job, she finds herself set up, on the run and at the mercy of a new enemy, her scary sister Camilla, played by the excellent Sylvia Hoeks. A chase ensues as Salander tries to work out her plan, caught in an ever-deepening web of corruption, and strike back before it is too late. Director Alvarez keeps the action lean, a short-haired Foy convinces as Salander, hurting men who hurt women, grittily anchoring this pleasingly propulsive and gripping thriller. Opens Nov 21
