DUDLEY STRANGEWAYS
Breathe @ Undertone, Cardiff
Fri 12 Oct
If you’ve ever descended the treacherous steps of Undertone you’ll be familiar with the greeting you receive upon arrival on most weekends: kaleidoscopic lighting, shadowy corners, bottles of water and whichever brand of electronica that evening is dedicated to.
Come mid-October, the aforementioned vibrations will be the clean-cut grooves of tech-houser Dudley Strangeways.
Often found at the side of fellow tech-house pioneer Michael Mclardy, either in a dark Boiler Room or at the side of a pool in Ibiza, the duo’s minimalist EP Calling Joshua shows off the pair’s ability to entrance with eerie beat disruptions and pulling back it’s listeners with a familiar melody. Strangeways will be accompanied by Mikki James, from the Swansea underground house and techno label who were “born out of boredom”. Mikki James’ uptempo and melodic tech-house should provide a pleasing contrast to the nature of Strangeways.
The combination of venue and artist concocted up by Breathe, is set to be an evening that could only be a match made somewhere in Berlin. Nevertheless it appears a small slice of Berlin will be brought to Cardiff this autumn.
