CYNT @ Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff
Fri 13 Apr
CYNT’s come a long way since it was Cardiff’s nightlife bratty upstart. Now picking and choosing its moments rather than being the weekly affair of yore, whenever the promotion resurfaces its usually packing some seriously weighty lineups. For this outing at its spiritual home of Clwb, they’re welcoming Palms Trax – aka 27-year-old Jay Donaldson – a booking typically on the pulse of the nightlife zeitgeist.
Breaking through on the Lobster Theremin label alongside the likes of DJ Boring, he was part of a group of producers pushing a stripped back, raw sound, refreshingly at odds with both EDM’s belching maximalism and tech-house’s increasingly formulaic limitations. Hailing from a little village just outside Bristol, these days (as is almost compulsory) Donaldson resides in Berlin, where he hosts a weekly radio show Cooking With Palms Trax. His sets usually join the dots from disco, squelchy acid and piano belters and everything in-between. His productions, meanwhile, have been released on vaunted labels like Hot Haus and Dekamntel, which is some stamp of approval. This promises to be a rowdy one.
Joining him will be Viewpoints, who’s been quietly going about becoming one of south Wales’s most in-demand DJs with his cosmic selections, as well as Eben Rees and CYNT mainman Elliot Mitchell.
