Here at Buzz, our crafting abilities extend about as far as making a mess. Can you empathise? Well, luckily we may just have found the answer in the form of Calon Yarns. This lovely craft studio officially opens in Cardiff on Fri 15 Apr. Situated on Cowbridge Rd East with the aim of bringing arts and crafts to the masses, the whole family can get involved with classes and workshops ranging from parent and toddler clubs right through to six week courses for the less art-savvy adults amongst us.
Whether you’ve been battling a pair of knitting needles for months, or you’ve always envied that friend whose gifts are always homemade, Calon Yarns can guide you from beginner to beyond. Lynne Seymour and her team of self-confessed craft addicts are all experts in their particular skills and provide excellent and inspirational tuition in a relaxed and friendly setting.
But why a craft centre in the middle of Cardiff? “As someone who has always enjoyed crafts – mainly knitting and sewing – I found that I would have to travel to places like Bristol, Bath and London to do a workshop in something exciting like learn to make felt or make your own bespoke lampshade. And when I wanted to do a short course in dressmaking, I hit a brick wall in Cardiff,” explains Lynne.
“I decided it was time to harness the trend towards make-do-and-mend and open a venue that encourages people to get creative, encourage talented crafters and makers to share their ideas and techniques in short courses and workshops and also encourage children to make and create their own pieces whilst learning basic craft skills.”
“With workshops in spinning your own wool, making your own jewellery and sewing your own vintage apron…to name only a few, we are getting lots of interest and bookings and are also starting our Kids Craft Clubs over the Easter Holiday, to get those little fingers busy.”
A perfect escape from the daily grind (nothing is more therapeutic than knitting…apparently), these classes are a great opportunity to meet new people and develop new skills.
