Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre, Cwmbran
Sat 2 Dec – Sat 20 Jan
This exhibition by Rhiannon Williams, a textiles artist born in Cardiff, will be on display in the Main Gallery at Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre until early 2018. Williams uses embroidery techniques to tell human stories. Her artwork explores memories of past times, life in today’s world, relationships between people and the sense of belonging. Her current exhibition is entitles ‘Hiraeth’ – a Welsh word which is somewhat difficult to translate into English. It is a combination of longing, nostalgia and yearning. It is a particular type of homesickness, perhaps for a home that you cannot return to. Williams’ decision to use this work for the title of her exhibition encompasses her aim to tell the stories and explore the feelings of people. Williams uses bright and abstract colours in this collection. She includes humans in nearly all of her pieces in order to explore the stories of individuals, as well as the relationships between different people. Her work is unusual, but incredibly powerful, and her ability to tell stories through her embroidery is something that can be enjoyed by all.
Williams studied Textiles at University College Falmouth and then went on to complete her Masters at the Royal College of Art.
