An autumnal Tuesday evening sees Cornish rockers Wunderhorse take the stage in Cardiff and deliver an electric performance. As the band continues to establish itself in the music landscape, the excitement surrounding their live shows underscores the undeniable connection they’ve forged with audiences.
Fronted by the dynamic Jacob Slater, who originally conceived Wunderhorse as a lockdown-era solo project before expanding to a four-piece, the group have been making waves in the last two years. Their blend of indie and alternative rock has accumulated them a passionate, dedicated fanbase, with this Cardiff show part of a heavily anticipated and fully sold-out tour close on the heels of second album Midas.
After a fine opening set by HighSchool, tour support from Melbourne, the crowd wait in anticipation; the lights lower and Somewhere Over The Rainbow, contrasting with the band’s rock sound, transitions into Beck’s Loser as Wunderhorse appear onstage.
Latest single Midas sets the tone for the evening, warming us up for a spectacular show; Butterflies sends everyone swaying, while Cathedrals stands out for its ethereal quality and emotive lyrics, while the playful vibe of Girl had the audience singing along.
A particularly memorable moment comes with the extended intro to debut album cut Leader Of The Pack, over which Slater freestyles lyrics, bringing a fresh, spontaneous energy that underscores his talent. The band recently told the Guardian that they love to embrace the chaos of live performances, to the point of enjoying when things go wrong – which certainly seemed to be the case at this show.
The set concludes with an encore of Teal – marked by the audience screaming the bridge back at the band – enriched by an extended intro and a snippet of Goodnight Irene, leaving fans craving more. Wunderhorse’s blend of raw emotion and electric energy made for a brilliant live experience.
