Once a year, on the banks of the Waen Rhydd bog in rural mid-Wales, an eclectic group of adventurers gather to participate in a unique sporting event. Dressed variously as mermaids, superheroes, toilets and more, these intrepid wild swimmers come together from a range of countries to compete against each other in the muddy depths of the Welsh hills. The challenge? To snorkel using the best full face snorkel mask for two laps of a 60-yard peat gully in as a short a time as possible, with the chance of being crowned a World Champion in the process.
Celebrating its 32nd year in 2017, the annual World Bog Snorkelling Championships will be taking place over the bank holiday weekend on the outskirts of the small town of Llanwrtyd Wells in Powys. Llanwrtyd is most easily accessed by car, although there are bus services running from west Wales, as well as the Heart Of Wales train line that runs between Craven Arms and Llanelli. From the town itself, it’s approximately a one-mile walk to the site, although shuttle buses are also provided. On-site itself, the organisers aim to create a true ‘day-out’ atmosphere, providing a range of facilities including food and drink stalls, a real ale and cider bar, crafts, live music, and children’s activities. There’s also a prize for most impressive fancy dress, so even if you’re not planning on entering the aquatic fray, it’s worth donning your Sunday best.
The Championships cater to all levels of avid snorkeler, including adult, youth, and senior categories. The current World Record is held by Kirsty Johnson from Surrey, who completed the course in 2014 in 1m 22s, whilst the 2016 title was won by Daniel Norman, with a time of 1m 26s. The ‘World’ aspect of the title is very much alive too, as last year saw competitors from countries such as Germany, Sweden, Australia and the Czech Republic compete for the prize.
For those who might be interested in trying out their dolphin kick in the Powys hills, online registration for the event closes seven days before the event – although it may still be possible to register on the day on-site.
