THE WOMBATS
Oh! The Ocean (AWAL)
Characteristically vivid and optimistic tones contrast with an exploration of mental health on The Wombats’ sixth album. The trio’s ability to capture sensations of everyday fear and cynicism within songs that are incredibly danceable, lends a brilliantly cathartic quality to Oh! The Ocean. Restrained yet vibrant synth textures accentuate the yearning for escapism on Can’t Say No, while The World’s Not Out To Get Me, I Am is made to seem seething in its minimalism.
There’s a care for detail, furthermore, in the twists and turns of the band’s compositions, complimented by subtle lyrical wit. Indeed, in spite of its pessimism, the record presents a story about recovery: final song Lobster finds our narrator finding contentment in the comfort of their surroundings. This introspective exploration of emotional states, paired with musical experimentation, makes for a skilfully crafted, serenely relatable experience.
