WOLFGANG FLÜR
Magazine 1 (Cherry Red)
Kraftwerk’s influence on multiple genres of electronic music is undoubtedly exceptional, so any work created by a surviving past member of the classic lineup is going to be met with both high expectations as well as some excitement. Wolfgang Flür’s second solo outing Magazine 1 is intended to be treated as just that but in sound form rather than print. Albeit a mag that surveys life as it is today, for better or for worse.
Collaborators include Midge Ure on the sci-fi disco-edged Das Beat, while godfather of Detroit techno Juan Atkins brings some Motor City grit to Billionaire (Symphony Of Might). Peter Hook applies some of his unique trademark bass playing to Birmingham, which also features Claudia Brücken from Propaganda on vocal duties. As a whole, Magazine 1 reminds us of just how integral Flür was within the Kraftwerk machine, as well as being a thrillingly sublime slice of thought-provoking electropop.
