Martin Tinney Gallery, Cardiff

Internationally renowned artist William Wilkins has recently taken a step back from his various public roles to concentrate on his painting. His new exhibition Paintings And Drawings brings you approximately 20 new paintings from the last four years, including still life, landscapes, and a number of his prized Venice paintings, all created with the painstaking pointillist technique he is known for.
Wilkins was born in 1938 into a family with some pretty ‘big deal’ ancestors. Not only is he descended from the doctors of Myddfai of Welsh legend, he is also the great-grandson of the architect of the National Gallery in London – art is in his blood. Brought up in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, he trained at Swansea College Of Art and the Royal College Of Art, London. He has collections in numerous locations worldwide, including Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC; Arts Council Of Wales; University Of Wales, Aberystwyth; Contemporary Art Society Of Wales and National Museum Of Wales. David Fraser Jenkins, ex-curator at the National Museum Of Wales and Tate Gallery, wrote an essay about the work for the exhibition catalogue, saying: “The paintings of William Wilkins are some of the most beautiful things that I have seen that have been made in my lifetime.”
