Eliza Carthy + Jennifer Reid
February 7 @ 19:30 - 22:30
£22.50There’s hundreds of years’ worth of English folksong, which amounts to the material being passed down through several generations, and in the tour pairing of Eliza Carthy and Jennifer Reid we can see the torch being passed right here. They’re not from different generations per se (in their late forties and early thirties respectively) but each do fervent and commendable work in keeping this island’s ballad tradition in public consciousness. Yorkshirewoman Carthy has been performing folk music since the late 1980s, born into the culture in effect – her parents, Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson, were crucial players in the 1960s British folk revival – and has recorded consistently and widely for more than 30 years, with latest mini-album No Wasted Joy released in early 2024. Reid, from Lancashire, specialises – in both a research and performance sense – in Victorian-era broadside ballads from the county, and their contemporary relevance. She and Carthy have shared a few bills previously and do a three-day Welsh stint in February. Tickets: £10-£22.50. words NOEL GARDNER
