See rock legends ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN + DJ ALAN MCGEE live at St. David’s Hall this weekend

February 5 @ 19:00

Echo & The Bunnymen

Delayed from May 2021, this 16-date tour for Liverpudlian postpunk icons Echo & The Bunnymen purports to celebrate a 40-year career, though with their debut LP Crocodiles having been released in the summer of 1980, it’s best to just accept that anniversaries are a bit skewwhiff nowadays. Nevertheless, Echo & The Bunnymen’s Cardiff live date in the expansive St. David’s Hall auditorium should be a fitting setting for their epic tunes, with original members Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant (vocals and guitar respectively) joined by a newer crop of musicians. You even get a warmup DJ set from Alan McGee for your outlay!

Buzz’s Carl Marsh spoke to Sergeant ahead of the Cardiff live show (quite a while ahead, in the end) and found him in a reflective mood about how things have changed for bands like the Bunnymen.

Will Sergeant: “When we started, you didn’t make any money doing gigs. No chance! We would have to go to the record labels and say, could you lend us £20,000 to do these gigs. And then that would just go on your bill. The only money we really make now is from playing live.”
