WEMI CAFE | FOOD REVIEW
68 Albany Road, Roath, Cardiff. 029 2115 1301 / www.wemifoods.com
Sitting amongst the many flavour-filled choices on Albany Road is a new edition. This new eatery is certainly something different: by day it’s a vintage cafe (going by the name of Mrs P’s Tea Room), and by night is a West African restaurant (Wemi Cafe).
The front of the restaurant has a nice, relaxed atmosphere. Most night people are in there having drink and listening to Afrovibes music as the remnants of the tearoom still remain dotted about.
We started with fried plantain (£2.50) as a softer and sweeter alternative to bog-standard chips. The tasty banana-like chips were perfectly fried and served with a slightly spicy sauce.
For our main I went for the grilled tilapia (£12.75) which comes served with chilli sauce, salad and more friend plantain. The meaty fish was cooked well, maintaining the tilapia’s natural soft texture and earthy taste, but the sauce gave it a much needed kick.
My partner went for a Jollof rice dish with goat (£9.75). Goat can be a tricky one to get right, but they hit the nail on the head with three pieces of incredibly soft, flavoursome meat. We were pretty sure that the Jollof (rice cooked with tomato, spices and vegetables) was made with vegetables were cooked from frozen, but my partner assured me that he thought it was delicious non-the-less.
Our waiter/chef/owner, Mr P, was fun and friendly and explained the food to us when asked. The food was interesting and tasty, and the place had an enjoyably simple atmosphere. I would definitely recommend a trip here, especially if you fancy a change from the usual Friday night curry.
