Glee Club, Cardiff Bay
Mon 19 Dec
Dressed in a yellow blazer, and storing more energy than a light bulb, the lead singer is simply electric. Jumping around the stage, arms pumping, legs shaking, and mini-afro bobbing, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is a broadcast of a 70s soul man.
Actually, it’s the Los Angeles based Vintage Trouble. Automatically it’s easy to see where the ‘Vintage’ part of their name comes from; black and white videos, sharp suits and bluesy riffs. Once Ty Taylor starts singing, it’s easy to see where the ‘Trouble’ lies; Ty’s deep Aloe Blacc-style voice is a recipe for broken hearts.
Bringing you back to the days of vinyl, and the essence of the original soul movement, Ty Taylor and Nalle Cold formed the band after creating a home studio in Venice Beach. They invited their friend Rick to play bass and recruited Richard on the drums shortly after. They don’t use backing tracks, synths, or tricks: simply a singer, bass, guitar and drums all perfectly gelled together. They record with full band takes because they want to capture the band live, in the spirit of old Stax and Motown recordings. This approach obviously worked for them, as they created 12 songs in two months, each equally moving, with Blues Hand Me Down and Nobody Told Me being particular standouts. Tickets: £9.
