TRUPA TRUPA
B Flat A (Glitterbeat)
From Gdańsk in Poland, Trupa Trupa’s brand of cerebral, sometimes abrasive indie rock is brought to us via B Flat A, from the Glitterbeat label. Among their fine roster of what we once termed ‘world music’, this band are almost token guitar-bass-drums practitioners, which when all’s said and done makes it clear that ‘world music’ is/was a bit of a silly term.
B Flat A, the five piece’s sixth album, could come from anywhere people make spiky punk-derived hoedowns and wavy lo-fi psych, and from any point since the late 80s. No harm in any of that.
Twitch is an especially good example of this group’s approach, bassline-driven and post-hardcore in the same way that someone like Madonna-era …Trail Of Dead were (that is, more vibes-based than about genre pedantry). Early Mercury Rev might be a pointer for Uselessness, a noisy jam with big splashy cymbals, while feet are often taken from the pedal with endearing results: All And All’s lolloping psychedelia underlining Trupa Trupa’s professed, not always obvious Beatles fandom.
