Tide Whisperer, the latest play by National Theatre Wales, will literally bring the audience with the show through the streets of Tenby when it premieres this month – delving into a story about refugees and migrants amongst the town’s Victorian promenades. With more people moving around the world than ever before, the uncertainty of migration is the fundamental part of Tide Whisperer, allowing the audience to put themselves through the thought process of leaving home in the hope of finding a new place to belong, but with no guarantee that comfort will ever be found.
The show was written by notable poet and playwright, Louise Wallwein MBE. Spending the beginning of her life moving around care homes, it’s no surprise that Wallwein decided to write a play devoted to refugees and immigration, perhaps understanding the feeling of being displaced, knowing how it feels to search for somewhere to call home.
The play stars Dyfan Roberts, a Welsh actor who has starred in films such as The Cormorant and One Full Moon. Those films have exhibited similar aspects of what the play is likely to present – the feeling of loneliness, of having to deal with a situation alone with no guarantee of a happy ending. In both of the aforementioned films, there is a sense of isolation, either literally through the death of a loved one, or through a mental state causing the character to push themselves into a lonely, dark world. Other renowned actors taking part in Tide Whisperer, meanwhile, are the likes of Lourdes Faberes, Susan Aderin and Ioan Hefin, who previously starred in S4C’S Hinterland.
NTW have produced plenty of previous works alongside similar themes: the recent English was another fantastic example, dealing with the difficulty of adapting to a new language for migrants, so this will have a lot to live up to. If you’d like to see it for yourself but can’t attend the Tenby production, Tide Whisperer will be broadcast on YouTube and Facebook on Sat 15 Sept at 7pm. SARAH DAVIES
