Aberystwyth Arts Centre
Thurs 20-Sat 22 Dec
Edith Nesbit’s novel The Railway Children was first published in 1906 and, most famously, transformed into a film by Lionel Jeffries in 1970. This British kids’ classic has now been adapted into a merry stage production in anticipation of four performances at Aberystwyth Art Centre this December.
The mischievous Waterbury three, Roberta, Peter and Phyllis, find themselves misplaced when their mother relocates them from the hustle and bustle of London to the unfamiliarity of the Yorkshire countryside. Having fallen on hard times in the wake of their Father’s false imprisonment and coping with their mother’s illness, the children find solace in watching the trains down at the railway station. In-between juggling adventure and dodging trouble, the three befriend the station porter as well as an older gentleman and an unlikely stranger, one of whom claims to have the solution to helping them prove their father’s innocence.
Kindness, mystery and hope are the themes of this family-oriented story, perfectly encapsulating the youthful fun and curiosity of growing up. Compiled of charming characters and all the joy necessary for this festive season, this performance is sure to leave you ready and welcoming of the spirit of Christmas.
