THE LOW ANTHEM | LIVE PREVIEW
Rhode Island folk rabblerousers The Low Anthem have sneaked a short-notice Cardiff date – their first ever in south Wales – into their end-of-2019 European tour, and charmingly it’s in a new, unconventional venue. The TactileBOSCH Lounge (set up by the Welsh avant-garde art collective of that name) is located within the Capitol Shopping Centre on Queen Street, and on this evening the four-piece will share the space with an art exhibition, Performativity, which is a collaboration between TactileBOSCH and Crazy Multiply, a group of South Korean artists. So that’s all very nice.
In terms of what to expect from the main musical event, The Low Anthem are touring to a promote a 10th anniversary reissue [pictured] of Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, their second album – so expect the set to draw particularly on its dozen-strong blend of old timey American folk, Bob Dylan-originated rock crossover numbers and indie introspection. Since then the band have released three more studio albums, most recently The Salt Doll Went To Measure The Depth Of The Sea in 2018. While their recording methods have become more technology-reliant and less traditional, the heart of The Low Anthem’s practise remains clear: intricate, introspective folk-rock with structures that build and choruses that swell. Low anthems, you might say in short. The cult following they’ve gained in the last decade-plus should make this a prime Thursday evening destination; support comes from Teddy Hunter.
