An atmospheric and well-plotted gothic mystery forms the basis of The Key In The Lock from Beth Underdown, following her popular debut novel, The Witchfinder’s Sister. Split between two periods of time, the story follows Ivy – who, having recently lost her son Tim during World War I, is left to reflect on the past, notably the tragic events that transpired in 1888 after a fire broke out at a house in Polneath, Cornwall.
A cast of complicated characters in a close-knit community emerges as it transpires how so much left unsaid, combined with the uncertainty of the times, can affect those living in the aftermath of such sad events. As the layers multiply to a crescendo of conclusions, despite offering an inkling about the big reveal The Key In The Lock’s narrative provided a few unexpected twists.
There’s a comfort to be had in the familiar style and much to be admired in this novel – particularly in relation to Underdown’s clever plotting, and the immersive descriptions that manage to capture the time and place so vividly. A clever, chilling and emotionally charged journey makes The Key In The Lock the perfect novel for a winter’s night.
