It seems only fair that one holds back the finer details when reviewing what has been described as an “unguessable mystery” by the “queen of the intricate psychological puzzle mystery” Sophie Hannah, but to a large extent, this reviewer can at least confirm that while maybe not unsolvable, The Couple At The Table certainly keeps you guessing until the very end.
When a note reading “Beware of the couple at the table nearest to yours” is received by seemingly loved-up honeymooners, their equal proximity to five other couples proves to be rather alarming. But they don’t have much time to ponder it, as the warning soon turns into a gruesome reality… As the book’s characters try to figure out, well, whodunnit, we flip between first-person Lucy, who hasn’t quite decided if she’s pleased about Jane’s death or not, and the third-person for everyone else, giving a nice balance of insight and surface-level activity.
Fast-paced and sporadically illustrated, with fun “police” diagrams that helpfully give us a lay of the land (and provide increasing evidence that nobody at those tables could be the murderer), The Couple At The Table is the perfect escape from the mania of the current world, without compromising on thrill-factor.
