The pretty Twyn square hosts the historic Castle Inn, run by Usk-born and bred landlady Charlotte. A local pub run by local people, there’s a genuine friendly appeal that oozes tradition and a community that values it. Dog-friendly, too, with its own resident Jack Russell and many others to be found enjoying the hospitality in the cwtch, the lively bar or the beer garden.
The appeal and survival of the village pub has never been more in danger than in current times: without these bastions of a local focal point, communities break down and traditions lost. Thankfully there are many great pubs across Wales that uphold the idea of welcoming the whole community, providing a meeting place, good local beers and ales and good quality food – the Castle is one of them.
We arrived on a Friday evening, staying for one night with family and three dogs in tow. Immediately we were welcomed by Doris – and her owner – advising us of where to park, the specials of the day and pointing out the supply of doggy snacks on the bar. As for the human food at the Castle, it’s locally sourced, quality-driven contemporary dishes adding to the already established reputation – created by a new chef plus a team of three.
After checking into the dog-friendly rooms, we ate in the conservatory with dogs in tow. The steak, homemade lasagne and linguine were chosen alongside pie of the day (steak and ale), all served with fresh veg and a choice of sides. Desserts were a sticky toffee pudding and a shared tiramisu.
To say this was one of the better places I have eaten recently is an understatement. Not lacking in the taste department or the generous portions, Charlotte and her team have created a thoughtful and non-fussy menu. All the staff – in fact, all the locals – were friendly, helpful and polite. An evening spent at The Castle is a welcome and an almost nostalgic experience; rest assured the dogs were equally impressed and are demanding a repeat visit…
