THANK
I Have A Physical Body That Can Be Harmed (Big Scary Monsters)
Noise-rock types can have a tendency to take themselves too seriously, but not Thank. The tracklisting for I Have A Physical Body That Can Be Harmed boasts such titles as Woke Frasier, Dead Dog In A Ditch and Writing Out A List Of All The Names Of God is indicative of a second LP that repeatedly raises a smirk while remorselessly punching you in the throat. Little wonder that they’ve got a support slot with Future Of The Left lined up.
Amid the thump and screech, the tangle of bass rumble, snapping snare and synth weirdness, is vocalist Freddy Vinehill-Cliffe, screaming about the horrors of being served a pint of Guinness in a Madri glass and delivering deadpan lines like “I’ve got a sickness – it’s called being very handsome and a skilful lover with a good credit rating disease” in a manner that recalls DC Gates of Cardiff (semi-)legends Gindrinker.
Don’t expect Thank to follow in the footsteps of Leeds contemporaries English Teacher and scoop the Mercury Prize any time soon – they’re much too abrasive to be mainstream crowdpleasers – but I Have A Physical Body That Can Be Harmed is further proof of the health of the city’s music scene.
