TEAK SECOND BIRTHDAY | CLUB REVIEW
Jacob’s Antiques Basement, Cardiff, Fri 11 Mar
Teak consistently dishes out an atmosphere that is simply inimitable, as if each and every person in the crowd is encased in their own little bubble of happiness. The mood in the basement of Jacob’s Antiques last Friday was certainly no different and was again infused with an organic love that only Teak is capable of generating. It seems that the creatives behind the Cardiff club night can do no wrong in terms of their eclectic line ups.
For Teak’s second birthday, Amsterdam’s Antal graced the decks to deliver a set abundant with diversity, bringing a whole new meaning to the word groove. Antal Heitlager, owner of record label Rush Hour which is home to the likes of DJ Hunee, proved that his interest in music’s DIY culture is not a thing of past, with a selection of disco anthems that were equally as varied as they were soulful. Embedded deep in his uplifting mixes were carefully cultivated sounds he had collected from all across the globe, putting a fresh spin on global musicality which rightly garnered enthusiastic reactions from the animated crowd. His psychotropic African-inspired beats proved to be particularly heavy hitters with guests.
Masterfully emblazoning a sound that cannot be reciprocated, Antal and Teak were the perfect collaboration for the birthday celebrations. It was easy to see why they’d saved Antal for this occasion. His whole set was delivered with a raw, relentless tenacity which evidently comes with many years of experience. A sonic, ethereal amalgamation of multi-faceted tunes supplied by respected DJs Rikki Humphrey and Seka set the scene for the talented Antal, and integrated mesmerised attendees in a frenzy of excellent music.
There is absolutely nothing like the jubilant, unique ambience experienced at Jacob’s Antiques. Teak continually instils such a hype and tickets regularly sell out within minutes because it embraces the underground music scene in a way that no other can offer. Jacob’s Antiques has unquestionably been turned into a musical haven for dance-worshippers and lovers of glittering disco thanks to the music moguls behind Teak.
