The fact that Cardiff is, later this year, getting a dedicated ‘city museum’ is not quite new news; of this I am aware. What is new, though, is the fact that Swn festival is due to be getting an exhibit as part of The Cardiff Story.
Jon Rostron – who, alongside Huw Stephens, puts on the festival each year – has just Tweeted the following: “Proud that @swnfestival will feature in Cardiff’s new City Museum. Need to find an item for display…”
Yeah, I get my news from Twitter. I am that goddamn modern.
Obviously it’s great that Cardiff’s history is getting a platform – given that the last museum of its kind in the Welsh capital closed more than 85 years ago – and it’s even better that some of its modern cultural developments are being honoured.
Cardiff is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with on the UK music scene, and this is at least in part thanks to Swn. Since it was established in 2007, the festival has been responsible for bringing a veritable host of new bands to play in the city – and for providing a jolly good annual knees-up for the indie contingent, to boot.
If Cardiff’s story is going to be told, it’s vital that all aspects of it are covered. We’re lucky enough to have a thriving music scene here and I, for one, am pleased that it’ll be getting the recognition it deserves.
The Cardiff Story is due to open in the Hayes’s Old Library building in November 2010.
