It feels like forever ago that Heavy Is The Head, the second major studio album from Stormzy, was crowned king of the charts back in early 2020. After almost three years of buildup and over six years since he last performed in Wales, expectations for his debut arena tour are sky-high. Fortunately for Cardiff, Stormzy rises to the occasion with buckets of pent-up energy.
Decked out all in black with a vest that’s almost certainly a nod to his Banksy-designed Union Jack Glastonbury outfit, Stormzy makes for a towering personality in both height and stage charisma. There are finger guns, fire, and high kicks aplenty. By the 20-minute mark, he’s glistening with sweat – perhaps a more practical reason for the vest choice.
Stormzy has always stood out from his peers for his confident live vocals, and tonight is no exception. The bangers come thick and fast, drawing on his catalogue of punchy grime cuts as well as poppier radio hits like Own It and Vossi Bop.
The production is a treat for the eyes, ranging from solemn minimalism to raging pyrotechnic overload. The arena is transformed into a joyful worship hall for Blinded By Your Grace, complete with a gospel choir and a gigantic cross illuminating the stage. This is how arena rap should be: big, bold, and brilliant.
Amongst all the spectacle comes the surprise announcement of a new album dropping this year. The crowd roars with approval. The head may be heavy, but Stormzy’s reign will be long and mighty.
