Hitting the stage at Cardiff University this month is Hackney’s favourite daughter Stephanie Allen, better known as Stefflon Don. Since her emergence in 2015 with her cover of Wretch 32’s Six Words, to winning the MOBO award for Best Female in 2017, Allen’s career seems to be on upwards trajectory. A bit of controversy, with the video for Pretty Girls portraying boarding school girls smoking a joint and the broadsheets picking up on the story, did her no harm either, but ultimately it’s the music that will be doing the talking.
As is the trend these days, Stefflon Don’s second mixtape dropped in August this year, but she has an impressive list of singles and collaborations in her repertoire. Labrinth, Skepta, Demi Lovato and even the legendary Nile Rodgers have all been privy to Britain’s latest hope. Perhaps best known though for her top 10 single Hurtin Me, she’s more than a match for her American counterparts Cardi B and Nicki Minaj with a steamy energetic performance incorporating all her influences which range from hip-hop and grime with a little dancehall thrown in for good measure.
So bear witness to the phenomenon that is Stefflon Don in these relatively small surroundings, because next time you see her live, it may be from the nosebleeds.
