Patty Yumi Cottrell (And Other Stories)
A striking debut, Sorry To Disrupt The Peace provides a unique and intriguing angle by delving into the complex subject matter of suicide, as a mix of emotions are explored in this dark, deep and at times humorous novel.
The story is narrated by Helen Moran, the main character who has been informed of her adoptive brother’s suicide. Having moved to New York, she is determined to discover the reason behind his untimely death and decides to return to her childhood home in Milwaukee after five years to provide support to her adoptive parents. A host of unsettling emotions resurface as we are introduced to numerous characters and learn about her unconventional upbringing and cultural differences between family members, leading her to evaluate her own life and relationships – both past and present.
Dealing with a complex subject matter, this is a raw and vivid account of the effects on the remaining family members following a sudden and unexpected death. Life, loss and grief are predominant themes which are conveyed with both empathy and humour.
It’s a fine balance to get right but the author manages to simultaneously relay the story in both a sad and serious way. The scenes are set with vivid detail which works well, highlighting the contrasting themes while the intense plot provides additional elements, bringing the characters to life during their highly emotive state. An absorbing read, I await the next novel from this talented writer following this engrossing, dark and comic novel.
