SEX EDUCATION SERIES 3 | TV PREVIEW PART 3
The last of Billie Ingram-Sofokleous’ three anticipatory TV overviews has this teenage fumble-centric UK Netflix comedy in its sights, with its third season possibly landing by the end of this year. Some SPOILERS from both series are contained below!
British comedy series Sex Education has been with us since 2019 and has brought with it the broaching of many important discussions which would otherwise be reluctantly – pardon the pun – touched upon. Launching on Netflix, its cast traverse the socially awkward arena of a school that is seen through the lens of Otis and his relationships with classmates. Here, then, is an A-Z of Moordale High…
A is for Adam and Aimee.
B is for Band. (Eric’s relationship with Adam is initiated through the stereotypical bullied dynamic that is portrayed in media, though as we move into series 2 we see Eric’s identity change when he meets Rahim.)
C is for Crumpets (Our Aimee’s fave foodstuff!)
D is for Drink (discovery, dancing, and disasters)
E is for Eric. (A memorable moment from this wonderful character that feels pertinent to us all right now: “Wash your hands, you detty pig.”)
F is for Fellatio and Failed relationships.
G is for Great for exercising demons – support your friends when times get harder.
H is for Handyman – Jakob’s confident swagger is demonstrated in the way that he holds himself. This relationship with Jean is complicated.
I is for In distress – we see a lot of friendships in distress throughout the two series: Maureen and Michael Groff, Otis, and his father as well as the will-they-won’t-they storyline with Otis and Maeve in series 1 and 2.
J is for Jean and Jackson
K is for Kiss.
L is for Lily.
M is for Maeve.
N is for Newcomers (Isaac)
O is for Otis and Ola
P is for Promises, Plays (Penis hands in Romeo and Juliet) and being called promiscuous.
Q is for Quiz team
R is for Rahim – Eric’s love interest, who gives him a copy of Pablo Neruda’s love poems as a token of his affection.
S is for Sex… of course
T is for Therapy. Take your pick, Jean or Otis?
U is for the Untouchables – Olivia, Ruby and Anwar
V is for Viv, the super smart tutor who helps Jackson in series 2.
W is for Wet Dream, the bane of Otis’s life.
X is for X-Rated. As we explore our way through both of Sex Education’s series to date, we are met with honest answers and sensitive handling of topics within the series. A scene in particular that has stayed with me is the sexual assault of Aimee when she is on the bus; the cathartic sense of personal experience came through in the scene, and in light of the Sarah Everard vigils the matter has taken on a new level of importance.
Y is for Yousef, the shop owner who gives Adam a chance.
Z is for zany humour, stemming from the show’s creator Laurie Nunn.
Now we’ve been through our ABC’s, won’t you try binging the show with me?
