Richard Burton Theatre, Cardiff
Thu 19 – Sat 28 Oct
Shakespeare’s classic history Richard III comes to the Richard Burton Theatre this October for a limited run. Believed to be one of Shakespeare’s earliest plays, the story depicts the conniving Richard III (Gloucester as he is known in the text) and his cruel and ruthless rise to power.
As a historical figure who has been the subject of much debate, the play’s depiction portrays Richard as a power-hungry villain, determined to usurp his brother and claim ownership of the throne. Desperate to rule, regardless of the consequences, Richard stops at little in order to achieve his end goal. Despite his position as Duke of Gloucester, Richard has aspirations to rule. In attempting to do so, he orders heinous acts, caring little for others.
Directed by Joe Murphy, and performed in the Richard Burton theatre, Shakespeare’s Richard is a figure whose Machiavellian machinations both engage and disgust the audience. His ability to manipulate those around him, while confessing his schemes and plans to the audience ensures that they are, at least initially, fascinated by his ability to present a multi-faceted nature to the other characters.
Presenting a great opportunity for audiences to see the canonical tragedy performed by a wonderful cast. The production allows for audiences to experience the play as Shakespeare intended: as a performance.
