RAMPAGE ***
Dir: Brad Peyton (12A, 120 mins)
Premium mindless hokum from The Rock and director Brad Peyton who last brought us the ludicrous disaster flick San Andreas. Continuing his live-action video game streak after Jumanji, Dwayne Johnson takes the lead in this blockbuster based on a moderately successful game from the 80s. Not much to work with for the many screenwriters, as the game consisted of monstrous creatures fighting armies and reducing cities to rubble, which basically describes the film too. Johnson plays a primatologist whose best friend is a silver gorilla called George, for whom he has cared since a baby. His gentle giant is transformed into a raging behemoth, growing in size and aggression after a genetic experiment goes wrong; Johnson then has to calm his friend down as he grows to the size of a building and meets other genetic mutations such as a flying wolf and a mega crocodile. Dastardly Jeffrey Dean Morgan is the scenery-chewing baddie, Naomie Harris provides tech support and the daft CGI plays out with quips and OTT explosions. More creatures destroying cities then, but at least Johnson provides some sweaty self-deprecating fun. Absolute nonsense but enjoyable popcorn fodder. Opens Apr 11
