With more artists tackling gender inequality head-on in their work, here is another fascinating artist at Mwldan. Welsh artist Penny D Jones aims to highlight the need for women to be heard and her work generally reflects her own involvement in situations she felt applied to her. Following her project Llais Menywod, this latest exhibition shows the artist’s support for gender equality and the conservation of the Welsh language; Teimlo Llais is an interactive installation that plays with human senses, with the focus on hearing and touching.
Jones has used only black pieces to make the exhibition suitable for blind and partially-sighted people. Participants need to feel and understand her work rather than seeing it. Sound is a vital element in promoting her native language: as well as feeling a fabric quilt and a tactile ceramic work, visitors can listen to a recording of women speaking in Welsh.
Jones often experiments with new ways of working, using various materials to express herself into her work. In her projects, drawing, video and audio all form parts of her work. The launch day will be marked by a performance from a local Welsh women’s choir who are collaborating with the artist.
