MY NU LENG & M8S | CLUB REVIEW
Y Plas, Cardiff University Students Union, Fri 16 Feb
My Nu Leng are doing alright for themselves. Bassline purists love the Bristol duo for their distinct wobbly sine waves and top-end grit, the ravers love them for their straightforward ability to make fucking bangers. This year you’ll find them in the dance tent of pretty much every major UK summer festival, from Detonate to Parklife, SW4 and Love Saves The Day. In the meantime, though, you can get your fix of massive floorshakers on the My Nu Leng & M8s 2018 spring tour.
The M8s in question that they’ve brought along to the Cardiff tour date are a formidable lineup by themselves. Garage producer Royal T plays b2b with Champion, Dread MC provides his usual steady flow over the main event, while drum’n’bass trio Kings Of The Rollers close off the night with their contemporary junglism. British rap trailblazer Mike Skinner also makes an appearance, largely here on DJ rather than MC duties.
Add in support from all the usual Bedlam residents and it’s a rather packed lineup – though to the night’s detriment, also a rather packed venue. Y Plas is a solid rave space with a great sound system, but the main room inevitably ends up being just a little too packed to be comfortable when everyone rushes in for the headliners.
Still, My Nu Leng deliver the goods, with a diverse set that veers from the thumping bass of hits like Set It and Soul Shake to trappy hi-hats and even some detours into house and dubstep beats. This is hybrid dance music done right. You’ll have a tough time not making a screwface and throwing up gunfingers when the drops hit – and believe me, there’s plenty of them.
