Never Understood takes an up-close-and-personal deep dive into every nook and cranny of The Jesus And Mary Chain – formed in 1983 and something like Scotland’s answer to Suicide and The Velvet Underground – with brotherly founders Jim and William Reid telling all in alternating oral history mode, resuscitating demons and extracting skeletons from their closets with honesty, self-effacement and plenty of deadpan humour.
The Reids manage to – hilariously – upset two of their biggest heroes, Iggy Pop and David Bowie, and their narcotic consumption is humongous, though Never Understood is by no means a memoir of the ‘our drug hell’ ilk. Rather, it is a tale of kicking against the pricks, family loyalty, awkwardness, falling out and healing.
Jesus And Mary Chain’s early days are well documented here, including 1985’s legendary debut album Psychocandy and successor Darklands – which helped their American audience to grow – but it’s great to read about later albums too, like mighty mid-90s effort Stoned & Dethroned, as well as more recent endeavours and tours. The Reid brothers’ turbulent history that reveals itself over these pages makes the Gallagher brothers’ shenanigans seem more like the Chuckle Brothers. Never Understood is a tour de force.
