TIN SHED THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS MR EDGAR ALLAN POE’S TERRIFYING TALES
Aberystwyth Arts Centre
Thurs 15 Sept
Recent years have seen horror films pushing the boundaries of terror; from bloody films like The Human Centipede and Hostel to twisted psychological thrillers, the genre has been pushed so far that many claim to be impervious to fear. The concept then, that reading from a book can be as terrifying as these blood-drenched cinematic experiences may seem ludicrous to some, but the Tin Shed Theatre Company seem determined that dark gothic delight of Mr Edgar Allan Poe’s Terrifying Tales can still send a chill down an audience’s spine.
Tailored especially for the Brighton Fringe Festival, the Tin Shed Theatre Company has adapted a selection of Poe’s bizarre 19th century tales for the stage. This production will see the company continue their quest for innovation as they seek to create something unique and varied through a combination of performance and storytelling. The set remains sparse with only three chairs, a scattering of books and some empty bottles. Since with many of Poe’s most famous works, the real horror lies in the isolated first person narrative, this small scale intimate design can only enhance the formation of disturbing mental pictures and surreal monologues the audience will be treated to.
In addition, the company promises contemporary twists on these classic horror tales which will contest their durability in modern times. Poe’s often surreal tales leave plenty of room for the theatre company to experiment and if their performance, Taxi, is anything to go by, they will relish the opportunity to be creative.
