In MILF, mum, music maker, and marvellously entertaining and effervescent pop person Paloma Faith dips her pen into the ink well of writing a book rather than a song. This memoir of motherhood finds Faith spilling all across chapters that, like her, are perfectly formed, in language that is honest and uproarious, searing and uplifting, with no holds barred and no punches pulled and, quite possibly, no ghost writer employed either – this book sounds like Faith, like Faith alone – making the tome both believable and incredibly affecting.
Since I was sent this in audiobook, my focus rests necessarily upon the aural quality of this literary offering, and I have to say that MILF works wonderfully. Perhaps in print you’d need to make an effort to reimagine Paloma’s inimitable voice; perhaps the sentences would seem less stylised and more simple without her rich tones reading them to you. But, with the nuances of the author actually elucidating it herself, and knowing that this is her true, entirely unabridged tale, it adds layers of emotion, as well as further shades of heartache and humour as required.
Faith’s prose flows effortlessly, in all, and this book thereby proves that she’s a person of prodigious talent across numerous forms. Funny and fearless, graphic and gregarious, MILF is a fab book that I’d highly recommend to anyone whether they’re already a Faith fan or not.
