MAX COOPER
Unspoken Words (Mesh)
Brainy min.tech artist Max Cooper has been playing with the format for so long that this album feels like a perfection of the craft; intricate and technical like a mechanical loom. It’s been four years since the release of the last Cooper album I looked at, One Hundred Billion Sparks, and for the first half of the album his style doesn’t seem to have evolved much: it’s the later-on tracks like Exotic Contents and Solace In Structure that really shine.
Cooper is an audiovisual artist, and these albums mirror his live shows – big displays in three-act structures with a roaring climax, which is where those more exciting tracks happen to roll in. He also likes to delve deep into concepts, but it feels like an artist of this calibre could branch out a bit more: tinker with the kit and with the format for some brand new story.
