LOVE OBJECT
New Flesh (Italians Do It Better)
Is electroclash back? Did it never end in Russia? What’s with blood and weird stuff in the videos? I have so many questions about New Flesh from Love Object – but I’m unlikely to get any answers from the mysterious pair of Muscovites behind the duo, Danya Mu and Dasha Utchka, who follow the familiar synthpop setup of a man at the back with the gear and a woman at the front with the microphone. Singing in Russian is a twist on the formula, and unfortunately, that’s the most interesting thing about the album.
New Flesh is very one-paced and pretty samey, all deadpan vocals over pulsing keyboard presets. Its standout tracks are lead single The Kill and Transparent Woman, which would slot nicely into any electro mix, but a whole album wears thin quickly. If you’re looking for an alternative to the cancelled Crystal Castles, then give New Flesh a spin, though there’s not really anything new happening here from Love Object.
