After the success of Russell T Davies’ It’s A Sin and the outpouring of love for one of its main characters, Jill Baxter, it was only a matter of time before the ‘real’ Jill, upon whom Baxter was based, shared her story. Love From The Pink Palace is a moving memoir featuring Jill Nalder’s real-life experiences after leaving her hometown of Port Talbot, all amidst the rising AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and 90s.

RELATED: ‘Lydia Conklin’s debut book Rainbow Rainbow boldly thrusts you into a collection of prize-winning queer and trans stories.’

The Pink Palace refers to a large, grandiose and indeed pink London flat Nalder lived in with her friends during college, which also became a staple location for the hit show. She recalls her busy West End career post-study and how she campaigned for AIDS awareness and research, all while many others turned their backs.

This debut book is nothing short of astonishing, heart-rending and important. Nalder’s tenacity, care and spirit shine through the pages, her support and allyship for the community during their worst time are truly admirable. Love From The Pink Palace does a beautiful job of informatively sharing stories, while also representing and remembering all the courageous young souls taken too soon.

KEEP READING: ‘Writer, speaker and campaigner Natasha Devon explores unlikely friendships, social media obsession, poor mental health and more in her latest YA book, Toxic. Karla Brading grabbed some words with the tireless wordsmith.’
